Ashington Group: The Pitmen Painters

The Ashington Group of painters, pitmen most of them, flourished in Northumberland between the early thirties and the mid seventies. They began as a WEA (Workers Educational Association) class in art appreciation in 1934, but, encouraged by their tutor Robert Lyon, they took to painting and became renowned for the way they depicted their surroundings and working lives.

The history of the Pitman Painters was recently performed at the Live Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Now you can see for yourself the original painters at work creating their master-pieces, and see them on display in this rare DVD that was made in 1977..

Witness the great Oliver Kilbourn painting and talking about his paintings. See Tom McGuiness talking about his paintings and other members of the famous group.

This DVD also includes archive footage from underground Ashington Colliery.

This is a must-have for anyone interested in local history and will grace your DVD collection.
